Mediterranean diet deemed best six times: Is it that great?

In recent news, the US News and World Report released a report on the best diets to follow in 2023. A panel of experts ranging from professors to doctors who specialize in nutrition, heart ailments, and health and weight loss experts was selected to rank the top diets according to the following criteria:

  • Easy to follow.
  • Healthiness.
  • Sustainable lifestyle.
  • Safety.

Unsurprisingly, the infamous Mediterranean diet was ranked number one for the 6th time in a row. With an overall score of 4.6 out of a score of 5. It went ahead and achieved a 4.2 out of 5 for the weight loss category and a 4.6 out of 5 for The healthiness index. A Professor by the name of Joanna K Hodges, an expert in nutritional Sciences, stated that The Mediterranean diet rose to popularity somewhere in the 1990s after Ansel keys and their colleagues published a report. Proving that people who followed the Mediterranean diet happened to have a massive intake of seasonal fresh fruits, along with vegetables, fish, olive oil, and a light consumption of wine, and the chances of having the chronic disease for these people were extremely low as compared to other people.

The research showed that following the Mediterranean diet tends to massively reduce the chances of you contracting any chronic diseases, including diabetes, a few types of cancers, and even heart diseases. The main reason it is so healthy is that it’s mostly a vegetarian diet. And because it is a diet heavily reliant on vegetables and vegetable-based products, it tends to provide for a very healthy gut. But perhaps the best thing about this is that the Mediterranean diet is very flexible.

Since most foods are on the table when it comes to the Mediterranean diet, many of your favorite foods can be tweaked to meet the eligibility criteria of the Mediterranean diet. Because it is this flexible, people are easily able to stick to this diet and are thus able to see visible results.

To put it simply, the Mediterranean diet typically provides a lot of healthy green veggies to consume, along with healthy fats, legumes, etc., and less animal meat. Even if one doesn’t fully follow the Mediterranean diet, it is still highly beneficial health-wise as it provides Nutrient-rich and health-provisioning foods.
