It is no surprise that Luv Ranjan’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar(tjmm) has bombed in cinemas over the past week. It appears that this film has been made solely for a cash grab. The creators have overdone one aspect of the film: talking; how a person can overdo that is something one should only ask Bollywood film creators. The characters seem to love their voices as they can launch into the longest monologues out of nowhere at the slightest provocation. And the monologues are not even the worst part. It is the fact that there is little to non-existent space between one long speech and the next. This film is not even part of the comedy genre, is chaotic, and promotes a “friends with benefits” kind of relationship rather than the old-school romance that Bollywood has been known for.
This film starts as, for the lack of a better word, a low-budget Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara. The holiday, the evil, and the fun Appear to be the main themes of this film. It was created by Rajshri Films and Dharma Productions. This film has so much repetition in content that it is blindingly obvious that it lacks the proper depth to be a good film. It is also quite a while before Ranbir Kapoor is introduced on screen, playing the main character with misplaced enthusiasm. It appears that even he realized the sheer uselessness of this film. At one point, he wonders aloud the statement “Bina baat ke saara drama hua,” which, ironically, is spot on for the film. The film Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar(tjmm) is undoubtedly one of those cases where there is too much fanfare and nonsense about absolutely nothing.
It is hard to tell what exactly was going through the minds of the directors and producers while conceiving this film, but the main Idea was to show how messed up modern relations can become when the heart collides with the mind. This film achieves that with little to no effort, in all fair honesty. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar(tjmm) teeters between nonsense and inflated bravado between a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old girl who are desperately trying to make a big deal out of a relationship that began on a shakey note and ended on one as well.
