Shaurya Chakra recipient Balwinder Singh Sandhu shot dead

The coveted Shaurya Chakra Awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu has been shot dead by two unknown moterbike borne assailants brandishing guns today at his house on Bikhikhand in Tarantaran district, after the state government had withdrawn his security finding no threat perception about a year ago.

A man of valour, having been incessantly fighting terrorism and number of terror attacks on him since decades, Shaurya Chakra recipient Balwinder Singh Sandhu was pumped bullets by the motorbike borne assailants from a point blank range at his office in Bikhikhand in Taran Taran district.

There had been in the past forty life taking attempts on this brave man since the era of terrorism in Punjab during the eighties till now with alleged sixteen direct attempts with terrorists.

People say that, had the security given to him by the Punjab government not withdrawn a year ago after assessing no possible threat to Sandhu, probably his preious life could have been saved.

The Punjab chief minister Captain Amrinder Singh has immediately ordered for the formation of four teams of SIT to investigate the murder of Shaurya Chakra Awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu to bring his killers to justice at the earliest.

It may be recalled that Punjab has been embroiled in terrorism since n before 1984 and the Super Cop, KPS Gill was credited for completely wiping out this dreaded menace from Punjab after several years of efforts n strategies with hundreds of terrorists n people being killed.

The then Congress leader n the Youth Congress chief and now anti Terrorists Front chairman Maninder Singh Bitta was also attacked several times by terrorists in Punjab n Delhi who was lucky enough to come out safely of all these dreaded attacks. While Bitta was the President of Indian Youth Congress during prime minister Narsimha Rao’s tenure as PM , I vividly remember about a bomb planted in a white Ambassador car outside the IYC national office adjacent to Jawahar building office of Congress near Press Club of India in New Delhi which was blasted with remote by terrorists in an attempt to kill Bitta but he was lucky enough to save himself out of this dreaded blast on September 11, 1993.
