Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida Arrives in India

The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, arrives in India, more specifically, New Delhi, on Monday morning to explore the different ways bilateral ties can be improved upon in many aspects such as trade, investment, technologies, security, and even defense.

Later in the day, during their talks, Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Fumio Kishida will also discuss the priorities for India’s Presidency of the G20 summit and Presidency of the G7 summit.

The prime minister of Japan is expected to unveil his plan for a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” which will focus on the significant role India plays in the region during the visit. The ever-evolving situation in the Indo-Pacific, alongside China’s rising military assertiveness, is likely to lead to multiple talks between PM Modi and PM Kishida. Currently, the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister is expected to be somewhere around 27 hours.

He is expected to unveil his plan for a free and open Indo-Pacific for Peace at a leading think-tank during a lecture sometime in the afternoon. This plan is expected to highlight India’s significance to the Indo-.

While he was delivering the prestigious Shangri-La Dialogapore somewhere in June last year, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated that he would be laying out the plan for Indo-Pacific by next spring.

He had stated that he would be laying out a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Plan for Peace” by next spring, which is likely to consolidate the efforts made by Japan to promote the vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, which will have an emphasis on providing patrolling vessels and enhancing enforcement abilities of maritime law, cyber security, economic security, and digital and green initiatives.

The plan is expected to provide details about Japan’s policy and approach toward the Indo-Pacific. Through the last few years, almost all the leading powers have come forward with their unique Strategies for the Indo-Pacific.

Japan has pursued this vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific, intending to maintain and strengthen the regional rules-based international order.
