According to the latest news, the Hon’ble supreme court has stayed the contempt proceedings initiated against the former chief minister Uttarakhand and present governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshiyari for not paying the market rent levied against him by the Uttarakhand government in connection with the pending arrears of the Bungalow occupied by him and non compliance to the Uttarakhand high court notice earlier.
This decision of the apex court was given on Tuesday after the Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari had approached the top court few days ago requesting to stay the contempt proceedings of the Nainital High Court issued against him for non compliance n non payment of pending rent due against him, praying that neither he was given an opportunity to be heard in defence of his case and exorbitant penalties fixed against him etc.
It may be recalled that a social activist Swaraj Kaushal had filed a petition in high court of Uttarakhand saying that the former CM Koshiyari had not responded deliberately on the state high court’s May 13, 2019 order to pay the pending arrears against him with regard to the rent of the official Bangalow allotted to him which allegedly amounts to contempt of court. He was directed to pay the pending arrests within six months.
It may be recalled that another former chief minister of Uttarakhand n current union minister of education Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, former CM late ND Tiwari, Major general ( Retired) Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri n Vijay Bahuguna also had the arrears lying pending against them.
However, the union HRD minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had earlier already got a reprieve from the supreme court as he had already been granted stay in a similar case.
