New Samples of Infectious XBB1.16 Variant of Covid Found in India

In the latest news, 349 samples of covid-19, labeled XBB 1.16 variant, have been rooted down to cause this recent surge in new Corona virus cases throughout the country, according to INSACOG. So far, the 349 samples of this particular variant have been located in nine states and union territories. Because of this certain variant, the highest number of cases have been located in Maharashtra, which tallies to 105, then comes Telangana at 93, Karnataka at 61, and Gujarat at 54, according to data released by INSACOG.

This XBB 1.16 variant Was first located in January when two samples tested positive. Fast-tracking to February, around 140 samples of the XBB 1.16 variant were found. And then in March, that number bumped up to 207 XBB 1.16 variant samples, according to INSACOG data.

There has been a recent rise in covid-19 cases throughout the subcontinent. On Thursday itself, India proceeded to register 1,300 new Corona virus cases, considered the highest over the course of 140 days, while the active cases have now risen to 7,605. The death toll caused by this virus reached 5,30,816, with three new deaths. These three deaths were reported in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, according to the data updated at 8:00 a.m.

Dr. Randeep Guleria, former director of AIIMS, stated on Wednesday that this new XBB 1.16 variant could cause this recent surge. He did emphasize, however, that panic is unnecessary as long as the virus does not cause wear illness or death. In his own words, new variants will keep coming, and the virus will mutate over time. The current XBB 1.16 is part of the lineage of this virus and is a direct descendant in the XBB lineage of covid-19.
