China’s Attempt Fails: Abdul Makki Global Terrorist

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) declared the Pakistan-based terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki, a global terrorist on Monday. The organisation declared that Makki was an activist in terrorist activities under its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee.

However, China opposed India’s proposal last year to enlist the terrorist as a global terrorist. The country has opposed India’s enlisting Makki as a global terrorism activist under the Sanctions Committee(UNSC 1267 Committee). In June 2022, India slammed China for its support of Pakistan’s terrorist activities.

As the UN states, the Security Council Committee has put on strict orders to bring resolutions under 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011), and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals groups, undertakings, and entities. The council has strictly ordered freezing of their assets, bans on their travels, and an arms embargo. The United Nations Security Council guidelines come under paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021). The resolution has been adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

According to the domestic laws of India and the United States, Makki has already been declared a terrorist. The activist is engaged in serious terrorist activities like raising funds, recruiting and providing training to youth to operate terrorist activities, several attacks in Jammu & Kashmir in India, and so on.

Makki, the brother-in-law of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed, plays the reading role in operating LeT. In 2020, Makki was convicted and sentenced by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court on the grounds of raising funds for terrorist activities.

According to the US reports, Makki played a leading role in masterminding the terrorist activities in India and had direct connections with LeT, a US-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO).

However, China had put hurdles last year to declare Makki as a global terrorist. Even in the past. China had continued to give objections in the past in declaring Maulana Masood Azhar and other Pakistani terrorists as global threats. This declaration of the UNSC is the right slam on China’s supportive role in saving Pakistani terrorists.
